‘I just don’t have the time’. ‘There isn’t enough time for me to do everything’.
Perhaps you have heard yourself saying something similar…
My reply to each and every dentist?
Make your business work for you rather than the other way round.
This involves recognising what you are good at and where you need to pass on tasks to others.
First of all, ask yourself two questions:
1. What is it that is taking up my time?
Analysing this will help you estimate what percentage of your time is taken up with tasks which ‘fit’ your skill set and how much is taken up with work which really doesn’t utilise your strengths.
Take a moment to consider this now…the results may surprise you.
I went through this process with a dentist only last week and he was shocked to realise that he was working to his strengths for only 30% of the time.
2. What would I like to free up more time to do?
When you think about this, bear in mind the time you want for both business AND personal activities.
Perhaps you would like to spend more holiday time with your family? Perhaps you are missing out on taking your children to school?
It’s often the personal stuff that dentists miss out on and their families suffer as a result of this too.
Let’s look at how you can pass on some of the work which isn’t really suited to you and claw back some time for these important areas.
List the different areas of work you recognise do not reflect your strengths.
- Who do you have in your business who would be better to do this work?
- Would you trust them with this work right away or would they need training?
- Do you need to find a new trusted resource for the work?
Once you start to plan what work can be passed on and to whom, you can start to delegate it effectively and make time to do what you really want to do.
Get cracking with this process as soon as possible and make 2017 the year you stop ‘doing it all.’
